I am a parent and hugely proud of what my kids have achieved. Their many friends are equally wonderful. All are different. So, did they all follow the same study routes or go to the same HE institutions? Of course not. So, how does one pick a route for a child?
The short answer is that ‘you’ don’t! Influence, contacts, money – all may be important to you as a parent and even to your offspring but if the course does not grab their interest, then you are funding your life, not theirs. First class degrees (UK) or Magna-cum-laude degrees (US) at reputable universities are not gained by those over 18 having fun while reluctantly following what parents require. Real degrees require curiosity and interest. High grades in real degrees require commitment to evidencing that curiosity – and parents have their own lives.
